Greetings
Welcome to my first blog, I trust that I will motivate and enhance your wellbeing.
As a chiropractor for the last 16 years. I have countless patients who I have treated that constantly ask me what is my best exercise for joint pain. Be it your spine, knees, shoulders etc. Simply put, in a perfect world, that would be without a doubt SWIMMING.
The reasons why it works are:
- Its low impact: In this fast paced, high impact, high volume world. Your joints are crying out for something much subtler, enter swimming. Water has a cushioning effect on your joints. The movement lubricates your joints thereby reducing joint stiffness
- Resistance: It provides resistance to both muscles and joints, the resistance as you wade through water strengthens muscle.
- Flexibility: This low impact movement with its strengthening effects help to then improve flexibility of joints
- Feel good: Exercise releases endorphins which are feel good hormones, this reduces stress hormones this in turn reduces pain.
- Full body workout. Swimming is one of the only exercises that works most, if not all joints and muscles of the body at one go, so bang for buck, swimming still comes up tops.
With all exercise remember the: “LESS IS MORE RULE” which basically means, start slow, start small and slowly work your way up to level that your feel comfortable doing, because it’s not the length of time that your swim rather it’s the frequency of your swimming that is important.
Finally, please consult your family healthcare provider before doing anything new, as “different strokes for different folks”
Yours in health
Shekaar.
